Character Background and Description

“If you want to hide a child, let her run wild amongst the animals.”

On rare occasions, a child is born amongst the infertile tribes. Such “miracle” births are usually covered up and adopted into the fertility tribe to be raised by their elders, or they don’t live past early childhood due to complications from radiation. But in the animal domestication tribe, located on the outskirts of the Gator Bay area, there is less interaction with the other tribes, and more places a child can be overlooked.

Ellis is fourteen. Her parents breed deer used in transport and trade. She has daily chores of feeding all the animals and checking the fences on the property for disrepair or holes. She also helps on the properties of the other members of her tribe, especially the older folks who have more trouble moving around these days. When she’s not working, she’s often found amongst the herds of deer on her parent’s property or other animals of her neighbors, or bothering different people in her tribe for stories/ entertainment/things to do. She’ll sometimes help out with training the various animals bred in the area, and particularly loves when she can ride the deer. She occasionally sneaks away from the tribe into the “wild” territory surrounding it to explore where the animals are even bigger than the ones bred for work. She is heavily scolded if found out.

When she was born, the leader of their tribe bartered for a respirator and goggles from one of the travelling merchants. She was instructed by her tribe to wear them almost constantly out of precaution of the environment and radiation, but they also have the added benefit of covering most of her face and making her hard to identify. Ellis is tall for her age, helping to pass her off as an older teenager or a short adult. She wears patched hand-me-downs collected from everyone in her tribe, so her clothes are always baggy. She’s most easily identified by the large brown hunting coat with a bright red bandana sewn around the right arm like a sash, and by her goggles and mask/respirator. Her hair is dark brown, almost black, cut choppily to shoulder length and worn in a ponytail. Her skin is relatively pale, but the parts of her face that aren’t covered by her mask and goggles is freckled and tanned, sunburnt in spots, so even when she takes off her mask, she still has an outline. Her other usual clothing is ripped jeans held up with a tied belt with black leggings underneath, hunting boots with two pairs of socks (because they’re too big) and worn out worker’s gloves with a few holes.

Ellis is described as always underfoot, quick to help, and compassionate. She’s naïve to the world she was born into, and has to be constantly reminded that she needs to be wary of strangers who might find out about her origins. Because she is a young teenager, she is becoming increasingly rebellious and looking to bend the rules and explore away from her tribe. She knows deep down that her tribe just wants to protect her but still feels a little stifled. Because of her love of animals and the trade of her tribe, she doesn’t have much interest in the other tribes of Gator Bay, but longs to know what lies outside the boundaries.
